Florida police wouldn't have imagined that scrolling through pictures on Instagram will help them find a burglar and arrest him. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's office was keeping a constant check on Depree Johnson as he was accused of massive thefts. And when they checked his Instagram profile, they knew what they were about to do!
And they said social media is a bad thing!
After Florida police noticed stolen goods in Depree's Instagram photos, they released a search warrant against him, the photos being an obvious evidence.
He was under constant surveillance for jewelry thefts in several Boynton Beach retirement communities.
Florida Police believes that Johnson is the leader of a theft gang that has robbed up to 40 homes belonging to old, retired natives.
Two guns and boxes of ammunition were recovered in Johnson's Lake Worth home, along with about $250,000 worth of stolen jewels. He is believed to be the leader of a gang nicknamed the Dinnertime Burglars which had targetted homes of older residents and committed 40 burglaries in about 8 months.
Depree is already a convicted felon and has been arrested on drug, car theft, firearm-possession and trespassing charges previously.
His Instagram profile full of pictures with gold, guns and other expensive jewelery worked as a catalyst in his arrest.
Jewelry including loose diamonds were recovered from his flat.
