When you are a parent, you want to be as responsible as you can without treating your child like a prisoner. You try to build trust and improve your relationship with them as they grow older.
But sometimes, both parents and children make mistakes that lead to fatal events. Read the story below to see what exactly happened.
Shelby Allen was a beautiful 17-year-old girl who had a bright future ahead of her.
Shelby was not only a gifted athlete, but she was also a smart student who was on the honor roll.
However, a fatal mistake made during Christmas break lead to her death.
Shelby decided to visit Alyssa. Shelby's mother named Debbie trusted both of the girls.
Shelby's mom was working in law enforcement and was quite a strict parent. However, she trusted Shelby and Alyssa enough to let them go to parties even.
Shelby and Alyssa went outside to buy some tacos. But then, they received a text message from their friend named Jane, who was drinking alcohol.
Alyssa and Shelby decided to join Jane and her family in drinking at Jane's house. By 1 AM, his parents were drinking and told the girls to stop drinking soon.
Sadly, Shelby decided to drink a whopping 15 shots of vodka. Basically, she would be drinking herself to death.
Alyssa said that she told Shelby that it was a bad idea, but Shelby wanted to do it, perhaps because she was quite competitive.
By almost 2 AM, she finished drinking 15 shots. However, she immediately became sick and made Jane and Alyssa worry. By 9:40 AM on Dec. 20, 2008, the EMTs arrived and declared Shelby dead. No one was charged because Jane's parents and Jane's decision to not call for help immediately could not be punished under the laws in California.
Ever since the tragedy, Debie has decided to educate both teenagers and parents about the risks of drinking by creating "Shelby's Rules".
