The nervous system is like the wiring that keeps a machine going. It is also closely associated with conditions that we often suffer from, such as depression and migraine. Stimulating a particular nerve, called the Vagus Nerve, can help us combat such conditions effectively.
The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It originates in the brain as cranial nerve ten and travels down through the neck and then passes about the digestive system, liver, spleen, pancreas, heart and lungs.
The Vagus nerve is a major nerve, playing a huge role in the parasympathetic nervous system, which takes care of the 'reast and digest' part.
Vagal tone plays a key role in activating the parasympathetic nervous system. It is measured by tracking the heart rate alongside the breathing rate. It so happens that our heart rate increases during inhalation, and decreases during exhalation. The higher the difference between the inhalation heart-rate and exhalation heart-rate, the higher is the vagal tone.
Higher vagal tone implies that the body can relax faster after stress. It improves the function of many body systems, causing better blood sugar regulation, reduced risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease, lower blood pressure, improved digestion via better production of stomach basic and digestive enzymes, and reduced migraines. Higher vagal tone also means better mood, less anxiety and more stress resilience.
Low vagal tone can be associated with cardiovascular conditions and strokes, depression, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome and cognitive impairment. It may also result in much higher rates of inflammatory conditions, which include all autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
The vagal tone can be varied to achieve the desired status by either using an available device, or by natural methods that are mentioned in the following.
Humming helps stimulate the vagus nerve as it is connected to the vocal cords. Similarly, chanting OM also helps.
Speaking too, helps in the same way, as humming does.
Although the mechanism is not known properly, this much is known that washing the face with cold water helps stimulate the vagus nerve.
Meditation is an excellent way to increase one's level of positiveness. It is, hence, closely associated with increased vagal tone.
