Even in this world of modernisation and globalisation, there are parts of the planet where people are yet to connect with the rest of the world. These isolated groups of people know close to nothing about the outside world, and maybe, don't even know about the existence of a world outside their's! In such a situation, what would you expect their condition to be like? Well, here it is, and mind you, it's all fact!
Melanesia is a set of small islands in the Pacific Ocean, and the residents of this region have never had contact with the outside world. What is interesting about them is their fascinating belief.
These people believe that when they perform certain rituals, a savior reappears to bestow the people with materialistic wealth.
These beliefs evolved because, at one time, foreigners came with flying birds that the natives to the island had never seen or heard about before.
The people of this tribe often engage in building life-size replicas of the visitors' vessels. That's their form of worship.
They also try to imitate the way of the westerners, or at least, try to!
These people encountered these foreigners during the World War II, and as one can expect, most of the foreigners they met were soldiers. That's why their rituals include a lot of militaristic elements such as salutes and daily drills.
Anthropologists tend to suspect that this form of worship arose as these people have a political system based upon the idea of a "big man."
In the system prevalent in this tribe, the amount of materialistic wealth defines their value in society. And so the foreigners, who virtually had unlimited supplies of it, became God in the eyes of the local people!
It's been many years since westerners made contact with these people. However, these cargo cults have not yet lost hope of their gods' reappearance. They believe that their gods will eventually reappear to bestow more gifts if they perform the right rituals.
