Families should be close together and support each other. However, that does not always happen since some relatives can be actually horrible people.
This is the story of an innocent girl whose life was forever changed because of an indecent, scary relative that decided to take advantage of her. Read below to see how the child went from fearful and traumatized to a brave, loving woman who is ready to help other survivors.
Karen was only six years old when her uncle started abusing her. Yes, at such a young, innocent age, an evil man was already ruining her life. During that age, she wasn't exactly sure of what was happening, but she was aware enough that it was discomforting.
Back in 1984, a family photo was taken. This was 5 years before the harassment started. Karen is the baby on the left, on the lap of her mother. At the upper right of the photo is the uncle named Iain Langdale who was making fun of another relative.
When Karen was nine years old, the uncle Iain started raping her repeatedly. It would happen for years, since she was afraid to say something. She was unable to eat and sleep properly because of the horrific events.
Once a decade of passiveness passed, she finally decided to report his uncle to the authorities because Iain had children and Karen was afraid that the kids would also get sexually abused. The uncle was sent to jail for 18 years in 2011.
Karen Billingsley said that her parents thought that she was acting strange because they were on the process of finalizing the divorce papers. However, it was her uncle that was making her act strangely. Karen would get harassed at least once a week, and all she could do was stay away and scream at his uncle.
The uncle was able to rape her because he was always there since the family was large and babysitting was sometimes required. When Karen was 15, she moved out with her friend but had an overdose that caused a 6-day coma because she was still traumatized from all the events.
Because of the rape incidents, Karen had trouble trusting people and being in a relationship. However, in 2008, Karen met Charlie and she thought that he was such a nice guy, so much so that she told him everything. Charlie was very supportive and motivated her to face her past. Now they are engaged and are hoping to have a wonderful family soon.
Karen called her mother and then the police. The mother wanted to blame herself, but it was all the uncle's fault. After Iain was sent to jail, Karen became more confident. She is now a technical adviser and also has a Facebook page dedicated in helping other sexual assault victims recover and face their past.
