A teacher from Utah has found herself knee-deep in a controversy that was stirred up by her sharing photos of her 'fit body' on Instagram. The controversy almost cost her her job. Wanna know what the controversy was and what exactly caused it? Well then, read on to know!
A special thanks to allday for bringing out this awesome and inspirational story! Cheers!
Mindi Jensen is a teacher at North Sanpete Middle School. She is a divorced mother of four and loves spending her time being a mom and obsessing over fitness!
The divorce had left Mindi devastated and spiralling towards depression. But instead of losing control over her life, she decided to get into the gym and get back her life the way she wants it. It was a good choice actually.
Mindi began to enter fitness competitions donning barely-there bikinis to show off her svelte, hard-bodied figure. She'd often post photos of her working out or modelling on her Instagram, and that is exactly what stirred up the controversy!
It was a regular Tuesday afternoon when one of the parents of a student at Mindi's school came across Mindi's profile. The parents were shocked by the amount of skin Mindi showed in the photos of her profile. Other parents too were notified, and Mindi's photos did not set with almost any of them.
The parents jointly approached the school and complained about Mindi's profile, calling her photos "inappropriate" and "pornographic." They also were not happy about the fact that Mindi's profile was public for their children to view. Under pressure, the school's administration provided Mindi with just three choices.
Mindi was given three choices: delete the photos, change her profile to private, or, get fired. Mindi loved the job dearly, and so decided to go with making her profile private.
Mindi told a local news station, "Why am I taking this picture off? I get comments and messages that it's inspirational to them and these women like my story. If I put it to private, it's not going to reach these people that might need and understand me." She knew she could lose her job over her decision, but that was a risk she was willing to take.
The school decided to put an end to all the turbulence by simply letting Mindi continue with her job and drop the issue of her photos. They probably recognized the fact that if they did fire Mindi, they would be looking at a court battle that could last for years.
The school board claims they'll have a workshop for parents that focuses on "appropriate student internet usage." Mindi had a stern message for parents: "If you are not comfortable with seeing me in my fitness uniform on stage posing then take that away from your kid. Don't take it away from me."
