Right from childhood, our parents have been yelling at us to stop biting those dirty long nails we are in love with. I, for example, will like to grow them big to use them as a bottle opener or a scalp scratcher. The fact that our nails hide a colony of germs is not enough to deter us from being lazy to cutting them on a regular interval. Plus "Nail Art". So..
But, the second I came across the following facts, I immediately ran towards my nail cutter to cut my dear nails as quickly as possible.
Our nails can be home to germs, yeast and bacteria. The most common one is called Staphylococcus aureus and it is really harmful plus, can cause infections.
A study conducted in 2007 on 59 people shows that 76% of the people who have long nails and also suck fingers get down with diarrhea and Escherichia coli.
Its direct effect hurts your dental health to a great extent leading to tooth fractures in extreme cases.
Another study shows that people with the habit of biting nails make their teeth used to it. So much that they often end up grinding their molars while in sleep.
The brace wearing people who also bite nails can get their braces distorted or experience increase root resorption in teeth.
Sometimes, it can happen that the nails you try to bite can get stuck in your gums half eaten and then cause swelling and infections. Eww!
The harmful bacteria living from a long time will also contribute to a bad breath which can tarnish your image as well.
When the 'Staphylococcus Aureus' bacteria enter the pores or opening of your finger tips, its combination with saliva can lead to a yellow pus in a matter of days.
It can also give you Herpes, if it becomes your habit.
Nail varnishes might contain formaldehyde which is so not edible.
Excessive nail biting can damage the nail bed so badly that they can become the last nails you have ever bitten.
