The Beechcraft Super King Air twin-engine aircraft with five aboard, including a pilot and four American tourists, struck the DFO Essendon after taking off from nearby Essendon Airport, heading for King Island, Australia.
Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said, "Looking at the fireball, it is incredibly lucky that no-one was at the back of those stores or in the car park of the stores that no-one was even hurt."
According to a spokesperson, it took 90 minutes for the firefighters to control the blaze and finally putting it out.
