About 13 girls from Rewari, Haryana, went on a hunger strike for a week. And dozens of others supported and joined them. They demanded their school to be upgraded up to class XII.
The girls have been demanding school's upgradation for a long time, as they have to travel for about four kilometres every day to neighbouring Kanwali village to attend higher secondary classes.
Despite assurance given by local MLAs, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), District Education Officer (DEO) and police administration, the girls refused to withdraw protest. Girls' parents and villagers also joined the protest.
Five of them were hospitalised frequently as they complained of dehydration. The maximum temperature of Rewari has touched 42 degrees celsius.
This is not for the first time that girls and villagers have demanded upgradation of the school. There have been protests earlier too.
On May 17, 2017, the BJP-led Haryana government intervened and assured the girls of suitable action. This made girls to relent.
