Liverpool with the kind of attack they boast can devastate any team in England and they did exactly that with the likes of Mane, Coutinho, and Firmino. At their best Liverpool is capable of annihilating any defense and Klopp is well aware of that fact. The real problem lies in the midfield and defense area. In midfield, Liverpool do have depth with the likes of Jordan Henderson, Emre Can, Adam Lallana and Lucas Leiva but the added fixtures including those of Europe will take its toll. And that’s not it, Liverpool’s midfield has been criticized for lacking energy and penetration because they lack the personnel who play that role. Jordan Henderson finds it suitable to sit deep and dictate the pace whereas Lallana does have the traits to carry that duty but cannot do it on a consistent basis.Because of the reasons stated above, Liverpool has been linked with this Schalke wonder kid who Klopp things could be their midfield kingpin in the next few years. Barring Henderson Liverpool doesn’t boast a top quality performer who has the capability to perform in Europe and that’s why Klopp is looking overseas to bring this wonder kid to Liverpool. He’s been linked with Naby Keita but the resistance from RB Leipzig is forcing him to look elsewhere. And that’s why Klopp has set his sights on Max Meyer.
Meyer has the ability to pick up the ball from deep and run at opposition’s midfield offering direct and deep penetration from midfield which would be a welcome addition to Klopp’s side considering he had a similar player in Ilkay Gundogan during his Dortmund days and he fits perfectly in Klopp's system of heavy metal football.
Despite the talent and the potential, Meyer has been plagued with a series of ankle problems which has forced him to watch from the sidelines time and time again. Coming to English football would be a huge challenge as it’s more frenetic, more physical and he’ll have more pressure and responsibilities on his shoulder as he’ll be playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Stats show that Meyer has had quite a stale season as he returned just one goal and an assist in 27 appearances plus the headache of injury concerns. However, this doesn’t mean he cannot improve upon his performances. He’s still 21 years of age and considering Klopp’s pedigree, he won’t be hesitating in joining forces with him.
According to German newspaper Bild, Meyer was quoted saying "I got an offer for the extension, but decided with my management not to accept it."
Schalke considering his age and talent at his disposal has slapped a £45 million price tag on Meyer. It does seem excessive for a 21-year-old despite his high potential but such is the transfer market these days.
Apart from dishing out £45million, Liverpool has to fend off Tottenham’s attempts to lure the youngster to London. Spurs has had an excellent season finishing second and with a great manager in the face of Pocchettino and with an expanding stadium and fanbase, will be looking to bring the power back to London from Manchester along with Chelsea.
