Liverpool and Manchester United's rivalry goes a long way, back in 1990 Liverpool fans taunted Manchester United to go on and surpass Liverpool's record of 18 Premier League titles which Manchester United finally surpassed in 2011, much to the dismay of Liverpool fans. Familiarity breeds contempt and whenever these two sides meet, the tempestuousness is automatically turned to 11.It's said that you can leave a football club but the football club never leaves you and quite rightly so. When you join a football club, it becomes a part of your identity and you cannot help but be turned into a fan of that particular club. Gerrard, Carragher, Fowler etc all are still avid Liverpool supporters while Neville, Giggs, Schmeichel etc are all Man Utd supporters. But what happens when an ex-Liverpool superstar meets an ex-Manchester United superstar? Fireworks! And that's exactly what happened when Cristiano Ronaldo's Real Madrid met Fernando Torres' Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals. What's more interesting is that once upon a time, both were considered the two best players on the planet! The two were exchanged in a heated bust-up during the game.Want to know what Fernando Torres said to Cristiano Ronaldo? Read here.
In what was a match-up between last year's two finalists, Atletico welcomed Real at the Vicente Calderón. The two are fierce rivals of each other which stemmed from the fact that they are based out of the same city i.e. Madrid.
The reverse fixture ended 3-0 in favor of Real Madrid which meant Atletico had to match the scoreline just to take the match into extra time. However, Atletico nearly pulled the rabbit out of the hat when they scored 2 goals inside the first 20 minutes of the game.
Right before the halftime, following some schoolboy defending errors from Atletico Madrid, Isco scored for Los Blancos which sealed their berth in the Champions League finals. The aggregate score at halftime read Atletico 2 - 4 Real which meant Atletico would need to score 3 goals in second half to register their berth in finals, a task which they couldn't complete.
Torres and Ronaldo met once again, this time in different colors than what they used to wear in England but the beef between them is still the same.
The two were involved in a heated exchange right before half-time. Spanish publication Marca had interpreted the exchange after doing a little bit of lip-reading. And claimed Torres asked the Real star: "What's wrong? Clown," before Ronaldo then replied: "Go home, idiot," suggesting the tie was over for Atletico. Torres then concluded the confrontation by saying "Son of a b****" to Ronaldo.
On Sunday, 4th June, the world will be glued to their TV sets when Juventus will play Real Madrid in the Champions League finals.
