Cyber Security In Nepal: It's Time To Give A Serious Concern

Advancement of technology is the world's biggest achievement of this century. And Nepal, a small landlocked Asian nation is not an exception.Recently I heard, one out of three people are now planning to conduct and promote their business through online these days. It has become the fastest way of communicating any prototype products among customers. Along with the business policies and strategies getting implemented online, Cyber Security has emerged as a burning issue.Note: This article is based on the content provided by Chiranjibi Adhikari, CEO, IctFrame.

Cyber Security term is raised globally since many confidential data and info are seen on the dark site.

Per day 1 out of 10 people’s info are hacked although most highly paid and death penalty punishment is given to the committers. And it has become essential to know the concept of Cyber Security and how we can maintain our info secure from hackers. In the case of Nepal, many cyber security breaches had been regularly broadcasted through TV, online portal and newspaper. It has been very risky, challenging and critical in Technology environment in Nepal faces. Today, despite their high regard for security and privacy, relevant policies regarding Cyber Security Situation in Nepal. Due to lack of sound knowledge among people and IT Professionals, we are not able to address the growing security breach concerns of the Cyber Users. So, it has become essential to think on this Cyber Security Topic, since our government confidential accounts along with personal accounts are hacked, last time. If we don't think today, we will be in great problem tomorrow.

Nepal is not the only country.

The USA, Australia, India, China, along with other counties are facing the same problem. But now they have applied many techniques of using like Password Managers to secure their data, using different utility to trace the cyber crime, so it’s time to think for our’s data as well.

In developing countries like Nepal, Poor Digital Access, Institutional Instability and Regime Instability are the main cause of being Cyber Security blunders.

Several studies show that there were no specific rules and regulation regarding Cyber Law in Nepal earlier. So people have the same perception that if they commit any crime, then they would be easily escaped. This is the reason hackers got the chance to do blunders.

Rapid increase in the Internet users.

According to Internet Service Providers (ISPs), the number of people engaged on the Internet has increased by 50% annually. Just in 2000, it was found that only 35,000 were the total users. But the number reached to 10 times by 2009 and still in the progress of increasing for ICT applications and Internet consumption. There are also many hidden facts that boost up this trend in Nepal. In the business organization, around 30% employee are engaged on Internet services while for international and private home users the use of Internet was around 20% each, but the case is still in progress. Many schools, colleges, and computer training institutes are also using internet facilities to provide quality or market friendly education to the students; this has also increased the use of the internet. So we are collecting many Data per day, and it has become essential to secure our data’s. This is only possible with our efforts and hard labor. Now let’s know what are reasons behind of being cybercrime vulnerabilities in Nepal.

Online security is a challenge!

Not only this, most of the people have no knowledge on how to keep their account secure, at times, even the IT technicians do not understand well. So, general to high-level technicians are needing the basic knowledge. Reports say, innocent people are even ready to share their info like first name, last name, birthdays, phone numbers and locations, and hackers can easily trace them and know their presence.

This is what law says:

There are also many worked done by Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). The Cyber Law Act of 2006/2007 has declared hacking, stealing data, pirating software, and posting defamatory information online as being criminals and civil offenses. Under this law, the government can punish cyber-offenders with up to 5 years of imprisonment and fine up to $1,000 depending on the severity.

Many awareness programs are conducted in Nepal to make people aware of Cyber Crimes.

Many sectors like banking, hospital, army camp, police camp, government offices, etc. are using much genuine software, VPN, firewalls; awareness on password updating policies, proper backup systems and highly availability with SAN and VMware technologies. Last time Microsoft had stopped supporting Windows XP in April of 2014 after it was identified that the operating system had the highest number of vulnerabilities. Similarly, Pendrive has also many viruses which affect the systems. Similarly, many parents are unaware of their children’s activity on the internet such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. Besides, many cyber crimes are also not reported although they know that their sites are hacked to secure from clients concern.

Nepal's government is expected to give more attention.

Besides, IT professionals have to conduct program regarding Cyber Security on timely basis, so that other IT professionals know about their weakness and make our business secure and even the general people make their password strong to reduce from cyber risks and crimes. Then only the motto of Cyber Security would be achieved and our Cyber Security would be in strong position.(The article was originally covered in 2016)
